Interviewing effectively

Everyone has their individual way of interviewing and there is not a right or wrong way.

We do get asked to work with clients on their interviewing and on occasions to sit in on interviews with them. This is why we felt this is an area to cover in detail. You may find this useful, or if you are confident in interviewing, you may wish to move on to the next section.

Interviewing is where opinion can ultimately effect the process and where you essentially have to find a style which suits you and your organisation. There are some simple general guidelines to follow, which we feel can ensure success. Interviewing ineffectively can be expensive both in time and money.

We advise Candidates that an interview is very much a 2 way process. Of course for you, the interview will be about assessing the Candidates suitability for the role. They will also be assessing whether your Company and your role are suitable for them.

The guidelines that we feel are effective are as follows:

Personal details:

Talk through the Candidate's personal details, to give you a clear understanding of the Candidate on a personal level. This will allow you to 'break the ice' if there are any initial nerves at the interview. It also allows you to verify information, such as qualifications and training where necessary. The first few minutes of an interview can be very revealing, you can get to know a lot about someone from talking through their personal details.

Skill set and career history

Discuss the Candidate's skill set and career history, starting with their current position. Gaining a thorough picture of their current role and responsibilities is key in allowing you to assess their suitability for your role. Check their reasons for leaving their current or most recent role and a couple of roles before that. This can often tell you a lot about a person and their motives.

The vacancy

This is your time to sell the role and your organisation, being clear and honest about your expectations of the role. We as your handling Consultancy, will have provided the Candidate with all of the information that they need to prepare for the interview. We will have forwarded the job description to them. However, it is important for them to hear you discuss the role in detail. You should not to over sell the role, however it is key to discuss the position in a very positive way. You are the ambassador both for your Company and for your vacancy. This is the time for you to talk through the role, outlining honestly what will be expected in the position. The Candidate needs to leave the interview, with a very clear understanding of the role, responsibilities and your organisation.

The process following the interview:

At the end of the interview, outline to the Candidate what the next stage in the process is. Will there be a second interview or will you be making a direct decision? How quickly will you come back to Lucy Walker Recruitment as your Consultancy with feedback? Is there anything further that you would like the Candidate to do following the interview?

Is the Candidate interested?

If, at the end of the interview, you feel that this Candidate has the right experience, combined with the personal qualities that you are looking for, it can be worth asking at this stage if they are interested. It is a simple, direct and above all honest question to ask, and allows you to clearly assess your shortlist going forward. Finally...

The above points are all guides which will hopefully assist you in this crucial part of the recruitment process. You may find all of the points helpful or only one of them, but we hope this will assist you in some way during the interview process.
